AbstractHistoryArchive Description

A report on the meeting of the Aboriginal Protection Society in Sydney on 16 October 1838. In this report, the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser refutes the words of one of the speakers, Rev. L. E. Threlkeld (Lancelot Edward Threlkeld). The Rev. Thelkeld accused 'the Editors of the Colonial newspapers ... of criminality in the sight of God for endeavouring to poison the minds of the public and excite their ire against the native tribes.' The Sydney Gazette denies the charge writing that the Gazette 'ever advocated the cause of the Aborigines' and that the editor, George Cavenagh, was a member of the Society.
