AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Halpine's poem, written under the pseudonym 'Private Myles O'Reilly', concerns Irish Americans who fought in the American Civil War. Some of these men went to Ireland after the war seeking support for the Fenian cause; a number were incarcerated in Mountjoy Prison, Dublin.

Notes

  • At head of poem: The annexed stanzas, addressed to Uncle Sam, under the title of 'A cry from the American Soldiers in Mountjoy Prison, near Dublin,' by Private Myles O'Reilly, was sung at a late Fenian meeting in New York and loudly applauded.
