BiographyHistory

A public meeting to discuss the formation of a Mechanics Institute was held in Adelaide on 28 June 1837. The opening address and first lecture were held in August 1838 and in February 1839 the institute's library was opened to the public. In 1848 the Institute combined with the South Australian Subscription Library.

In 1856 an act to establish the South Australian Institute was passed with a new building on Adelaide's North Terrace, with a public library, a museum, and accommodation for lectures and the colony's cultural societies, opening on 29 January 1861.
