Notes

  • Allardyce Nicoll in A History of English Drama 1660-1900 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1966) lists two versions with similar titles stating that both appear to be by H. M. Milner. The earlier version, The Hut of the Red Mountains; or Thirty Years of a Gambler's Life, was first produced at the Royal Coburg Theatre, London, England, 3 September 1827. Nicoll notes that this version was based on Trente ans; ou, la vie d'un joueur by V. Ducagne. The second play, The Gambler's Fate; or, A Lapse of Twenty Years, was first produced in London at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane a short time later on 15 October 1827. AustLit has not yet established which version, or an adaptation of both versions, was performed at the Royal Victoria Theatre in Sydney for John Lazar's benefit on 20 August 1838.
  • The work is included in AustLit because it was produced in Australian theatres during the colonial era.
