First produced in England in either 1828 or 1832. The 1828 version was by the English author Richard Brinsley Peake. Allardyce Nicoll describes both the versions he lists in A History of English Drama 1660-1900 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1966) as melodrama. The Royal Victoria Theatre advertisement describes the Haunted Inn as a farce. AustLit has not yet established which version of the play was produced in Sydney in 1838.
