Alexandre Dumas was being 'perpetually being troubled by applications for his autograph, for epigrams, or in fact, the smallest contributions to those albums of literary testimonial which it is now much the fashion of display in both French and English saloons'. He employs a humorous solution against a physician who approaches him.
