E. St Ives Bilston was a West Australian farmer. During World War I he served as a private in the 28th Battalion, AIF. He saw action during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915, and subsequently in France, but was later returned to Australia due to ill health. In the post war years he contributed items to the Western Mail using the writing name '398 X 28' (sometimes abbreviated to '398').
