An overview of Charles Thatcher's early years on the English stage, his migration to Victoria, his rising to prominence at the Shamrock Hotel in Bendigo, the composition of Life on the Goldfields, and his tour to New Zealand.

(In providing this overview, Anderson seems unaware of the Sydney season of Life on the Goldfields in 1868.)
