BiographyHistory

The Lyceum Theatre (or Our Lyceum) was previously known as Malcom's Amphitheatre (1850-1854) and the Royal Lyceum (1854-c.1855). After extensive alterations, the theatre re-opened in 1856. Theatre historian Eric Irvin writes: 'Over the next 20 yeas or so it suffered a bewildering number of changes, from dance hall to circus, from circus to theatre, and then the whole cycle again in reverse, while its name was changed to Adelphi, Cafe Chantant, and Royal.' (Irvin, Eric. Dictionary of the Australian Theatre 1788-1914. Sydney: Hale & Iremonger, 1985: 280-281.)

The theatre was also known as the 'Varieties' or 'Clark's Varieties and People's Theatre' (from August 1868).
