AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'This is the tale of an English country town called Shaggington-on-Hor. Its residents, affectionately called the Shaggers, are in the main a happy lot but they are blighted - or, some may say, blessed - by the lack of sons: each family seems only to produce a single male offspring while managing to produce daughters - many, many daughters. The Shaggers are a beautiful people so the solution to the problem of over-abundant feminine beauty is to set up a rather sophisticated marriage mart. All goes well until their jealous neighbours, the residents of Uppington-on-Hor, blow the whistle and create a national scandal. When a commission of enquiry is called to investigate, the Shaggers and their schemes come under more scrutiny than they would have wished for.'
