BiographyHistory

William Digby Seymour was an Irishman who was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1846. He subsequently became a Member of Parliament and represented Sunderland in the 1850s and 1860s. In January 1868, when Fenianism was in full swing, Seymour wrote a poem appealing to the Irish to show their loyalty to the Crown. According to The Empire (11 April 1868: 3), 'his call was responded to by 70,000 Irishman'.
