BiographyHistory

Local branches of Young Men's Mutual Improvement Societies were set up in Van Diemen's Land and Port Phillip in the late 1850s, and extended into the Sydney area in the early 1860s. The societies were non-partisan and focussed on intellectual pursuits such as debating, literary readings and recitals, and elocution.
