Richard Stevenson 'worked in printing house in England'. Upon his arrival in New South Wales, Stevenson joined the staff of The Sydney Morning Herald and 'remained with it until 1861, except for a year at gold diggings'.

Stevenson later became the proprietor of The Clarence and Richmond Examiner and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly (1886-1894).
