BiographyHistory

Born in Carlton, Nottinghamshire, just before the turn of the nineteenth century, Samuel Newham was convicted for theft of livestock, and sentenced to transportation for life to Van Diemen's Land in 1835. He subsequently underwent a religious awakening, and was believed to lead an exemplary life in the colony. On his death he was made the subject of a pamphlet biography by the Methodist minister J. A. Manton.
