Matthew Holmes started his career as a stop-motion animator. He began a traineeship with South Australian production company Anifex in 2001, and remained until 2010: the commercials on which he worked during this period included stop-motion animation for Home Hardware, Mortein ('Louis the Fly'), and Schmackos. He also worked as an animator on films by Michael Cusack, including the AFI Award-winning Gargoyle (2006).
Matthew Holmes made his feature-film debut with the independent Twin Rivers in 2007, but is best known for the 2016 film The Legend of Ben Hall.
