BiographyHistory

Rhys Jones was a Welsh-Australian archaeologist, and was a key figure in dating the arrival of Indigenous Australians first with radiocarbon dating and later with luminescence techniques in the study of Indigenous archaeology. When Jones arrived in Australia in 1963, he took up a teaching position at the University of Sydney where he completed his PhD on Tasmanian Aboriginal archaeology. Later Jones moved to the Australian National University in 1963 where he spent the rest of his career. During that time he was an Honorary Profession of the University of Wales, Newport and a Fellow of the University of Wales, Lampeter, and for one year was Australian Visiting Professor at Harvard University.
