BiographyHistory

'Niel Gunson MA (University of Melbourne, 1955), PhD (The Australian National University (ANU), 1960), 12 October 1930 – 10 April 2023 Niel had a crucial role in the foundation of the Aboriginal History journal between 1975 and the publication of the first volume in 1977, and he continued his active involvement with the journal’s Editorial Board until recent times. Niel was a PhD scholar in the Department of Pacific History, 1955–58, and a Fellow in the Department of Pacific and Asian History, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, 1962–93, after which he held a visiting fellowship at ANU. Niel specialised in the missionary and ethnographic history of Polynesia and Australia, and was also an eminent genealogist' (Aboriginal History Journal 47)
