Notes

  • A column in the Maitland Mercury of 16 November 1889 reports that 'the Call Newspaper Co. ceased to issue their two publications, the Daily Morning Express and the Evening Call' on Tuesday, 11 November 1889. The Mercury says this demise came about 'in a rather sudden and unexpected manner, and is the means of throwing about fifty hands out of employ. The plant is advertised for sale by the mortgagees.' ('Our Newcastle Letter.' The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser (16 November 1889): 7)

The printing plant was subsequently purchased, later in November, for £525 by the mortgagees.
