The Drill Hall Gallery was first established to train soldiers for the Second World War in 1940. Later, the building was remodeled to create an art gallery in 1984. Considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings of its kind, it was placed on heritage in 2004. In 1992 the Australian National University took over the gallery to showcase its own art collection and as a venue for temporary exhibitions, providing the Canberra community and ANU with a selective program of high quality exhibitions of Australian and international art.
