'Karen Dorante is Meriam/Wagadagam woman from the Torres Strait. She began her radio career on Thursday Island volunteering for the local community radio station in the early 1980s. Since graduating from senior studies in 1987, Karen worked with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, studied teaching at James Cook University and tried her hand at being an electrician. She re-joined the ABC in 1990 starting out as a trainee producer in Cairns. She went on to work as a presenter in Mackay and Brisbane most notably with the ABC’s national Indigenous radio program, Speaking Out. After 17 years with the ABC Karen returned to her community radio roots and joined the Brisbane Indigenous Media Association.'
