  • Parts one and two have independent epigraphs and part three a title:

    I. After Reading Zbigniew Herbert's account of the trial and death of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (1547-1619), pensionary of Rotterdam, advocate and statesman, in 'The Mercy of the Executioner,' in Still Life with a Bridle: Essays and Apocryphas, trans.
