Advertisement for: Performance for the third time on 2 January 1838 of: 'the Grand Romantic Drama in three Acts, called Jewess, or, The Council of Constance' and 'the Burlesque Nautical Burletta of Billy Taylor, or, The Gay Young Fellow' [John Baldwin Buckstone, 1829]

Notes

  • In an editorial on the 9 January 1838, the Sydney Gazette apologises to John Lazar for altering '... the words "Vivant Regina" appended [to the advertisements in the Sydney Gazette] into "Vivat Regina," ... which we then thought the more correct of the two. A friend of ours ... [has] set us right on this point by translating the words originally appended, thus "Vivant" they (i.e. the playactors) live, "Regina" by the Queen, ... If the latter be the correct translation, an apology is due on our part to the manager, for supposing him capable of displaying ignorance so unbecoming in a professor of the Drama.' Succeeding advertisements are not altered.
