BiographyHistory

Alfred Edward Pountney ‘spent his early boyhood at Rollands Plains, followed by a couple of years schooling at Port Macquarie’. He was apprenticed to the printing trade at the Manning River Times, and then worked at the Maitland Mercury and the Government Printing Office before returning to Port Macquarie. In 1882 Pountney established the Port Macquarie News and Hastings River Advocate and later became an auctioneer as well.

At the age of about 40 Pountney became deaf and ceased many activities, including his sports and other community involvements.
