Notes

  • Information from Van Diemen's Land newspapers received by the Sydney Gazette and noted in this issue include that the 'Theatre still continues open not-withstanding the sweep Mr, Wyatt made among the performers.'
  • This issue notes that Mrs Larra, a colonial actress in Sydney, New South Wales, 'has been engaged at the Royal Victoria Theatre' and describes a silver snuff-box presented to Mr Meredith, 'late proprietor of the Theatre at Hobart Town'. See also the Literary gossip about Mrs Larra and Meredith in the 31 March 1838 issue of the Sydney Gazette. In other theatrical gossip it is noted that the ringleader of a 'flash mob ... nick-named the "Native Mob" ... is one Riley, formerly a supernumerary employed about the old Theatre'. And that Mrs Taylor is engaged at the Royal Victoria Theatre ... 'and makes her first appearance ... in Catching an Heiress.'
