William Wilson Young ‘was a leading figure in the early days of provincial journalism in Victoria and Tasmania’. Born in Auchenblae, Scotland, Young came to Australia in 1855 and ‘went with his parents to the McIvor goldfields.

'As a youth he began work on the McIvor Times, of which he later became manager, and in 1870 he established a newspaper at Eaglehawk. Next he became manager of the Rushworth Chronicle. In 1874 he married Catherine Stanley. Launching out, he became proprietor of the Mirboo Herald, the Great Southern Star, the Circular Head Chronicle (Stanley, Tasmania), and the Frankston Standard, which was later formed into a company.’

Young was a life governor of the Royal Melbourne Hospital, a member of the Freemasons and Rechabite Lodges, and a secretary of the Frankston Football Club and Athletic Carnival. He lived at Emerald in the Dandenong Ranges in retirement.
