Notes

  • In 2013 an AustLit user in Canada bought our attention to a typescript version of this poem which they discovered folded up in a copy of Dawes's Soldier Superb. The typescript version has the note 'Finschhafen, Sept., 1943', which suggests that Dawes wrote this work whilst he was covering the Australian assault on Finschhafen, in New Guinea, in September 1943.
