This unit is a general introduction to the study of the novel as a dominant (post)modern literary form and to theoretical approaches to the novel. Through a close reading of a diverse and challenging range of literary texts, we will identify the conventions that characterize the novelistic genre, situating them in their specific literary contexts and their broader historical, social, and political dimensions.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit students will: demonstrate in written and oral forms ability to critically and creatively analyse the formal, historical and aesthetic qualities of the studied novels; demonstrate orally and in writing a creative and critical understanding of theories of the novel.
