A down-and-out novelist, desperate at the rejection of the novel over which he has laboured for eight years, dashes off a story in a night, submits it as the journal of the first love of simple Australian girl Daisy Smith, and sees 'Daisy's' book become an overnight success.

'Through narration and flashback, we learn what happened to Georgina, a rather wealthy widow. Georgina makes a habit of befriending artists who can't make a living from their art. One day a young would-be playwright enters this charmed circle and at once becomes Georgina's project of the moment.'
