John Titus Cunneen had a long career as a journalist and newspaper proprietor. His first involvement with newspapers was as owner of the Inverell Argus and founder of the Moree News, ‘but he spent the greater part of his career as proprietor-editor of the Yass Courier’ (Singleton Argus, 21 April 1943). Following a world tour, Cuneen acquired the Hawkesbury Herald and was its editor until close to the time of this death.
In an obituary published in the Windsor and Richmond Gazette on 14 April 1943, Cunneen is described as being ‘a widely-read gentleman of broad and tolerant outlook’, with ‘a particular fondness for the earlier Australian poets who first gave this country a place in the literary world, and could use quotations from them most aptly in his thoughtful and well-constructed articles’.
