Theatre in Australia is the second of two contextual subjects for students undertaking courses in theatre/drama. The focus of the subject is a number of issues regarding the theatre industry in Australia from the early nineteenth century to the present. In particular significant dramatic movements, playwrights and plays will be considered. In addition, a range of cultural, political and industrial developments which have had an impact on the industry are considered.

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Cultural history from the 19th century to the present - Theatre history from 1791 to the present - Different genres of plays practised in Australian theatre- melodramas, realistic plays, musicals, comedies - Commercial and subsidised theatre - Shakespeare and Australian theatre - Regional Theatre, especially RTC - Theatre and different groups in society - Women in theatre-past and present - Current issues in the theatre industry.
