In this unit students will be introduced to various elements of Indigenous Australia. Students will study a broad range of issues of relevance to contemporary Aborigines and Torres Strait Islander people. While there will be a particular emphasis on the Indigenous people of Victoria, students will gain an understanding of regional variation throughout Australia. Issues discussed include identity, self-representation, spirituality, family, gender, land, politics, law, economics, education, health, history, art and music. Students intending to sub-major in Aboriginal Studies are strongly advised to take this unit.
