John Andrew Roulston 'served his apprenticeship with his father ... Harvey Roulston in the offices of the Richmond Australian and [the South Bourke and Mornington Journal], gained a thorough knowledge in all departments, became a first class journeyman, and knew the business from every standpoint'.
After working on his father's newspapers, Roulston worked on the Tatura Guardian and the Murchison News before returning to the South Bourke and Mornington Journal.
