BiographyHistory

Joseph Charles Ryall was born in Cashel, Tipperary and came to Australia at the age of eight. He had intended a career in law, but ill health forced him to change his plans. Ryall 'heard the call of the goldfields and worked on many of the leading fields of [New South Wales], notably the Snowy (Kiandra) and later at Grenfell'.

In 1873, Ryall 'conceived the idea of embarking on a journalistic career' and ultimately established the Cowra Free Press in 1878. Ryall was extremely active in Cowra and district's community affairs. His positions included committee member of the Cowra Jockey Club, member of the Land Board and Justice of the Peace. He was also an early agitator for the construction of Wyangala Dam.
