BiographyHistory

John William Carter left England at the age of eighteen, arriving in Victoria in 1864. After a few years, he travelled north to Queensland, 'settling first in Ravenswood and then in Millchester, where in 1874 he became owner of the Northern Advocate. In 1877 he moved the plant to Charters Towers, renaming the newspaper the Charters Towers Herald, which he continued till 1890.'

Carter then spent some time in Etheridge before returning to Charters Towers. Around 1924, he moved once more, this time settling in Chelmer.
