In the late 1890s, at the age of seventeen, Arthur Ball became editor of the Burrawang Herald. It is believed that he was the youngest editor of any New South Wales newspaper at that time.
An obituary in the Southern Mail provides further details of Ball's newspaper career: Ball ‘left Burrawang, but later returned and took up partnership with his brother, the late Louis Ball, and Mr. Ben Moule (now of Bowral) as proprietors of the Burrawang Herald. On disposing of his interest in this paper to his partners, Mr. Ball was subsequently employed on the Scrutineer, Moss Vale, and the Border Post, Albury. Mr. Ball later became part proprietor of the Liberal at Dubbo and on disposing of his interest went to Sydney where he served on the staff of every daily paper in some capacity or other at one time being Parliamentary reporter. He was regarded as the best all round journalist in Sydney at the time.'
Ball eventually purchased the Ulladulla and Milton Times with a view to 'handing it over to his younger son Hubert. On the death of his son who was fatally injured in a motor cycle accident, Mr. Ball disposed of this paper and lived in retirement.'
