In the earlier 20th century, Wylie lived at Narborough, in Norfolk. During World War I he briefly served in Africa as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteer Force. He appears to have arrived in Australia in ca. 1924. During the 1920s and 1930s, as 'Flinders Barr', his poems and columns were published at intervals in the Sydney Morning Herald and the Sydney Mail and he also made occasional radio broadcasts. Wylie was a heraldry expert of some standing, and he was responsible for the design of the Australian Capital Territory coat of arms. In 1937 he was made an Officer of the French Academie.
