Music:

The film was caught up in a protest by the Musicians' Union against the use of 'canned' music, as a result of which the union banned its members from playing for 'talking pictures'. Newspaper in early 1930 report on the McDonagh sisters' struggle to acquire an orchestra for the sound version of their film. (See, for example, 'Australian Talking Films: Musicians Refuse to Play', Barrier Miner, 15 March 1930, p.1).

Release Dates:

Premiered in a private screening at the Roxy Theatre on 1 June 1930.

At the 2018 Melbourne International Film Festival, a restored copy of the film (by the NFSA, from the only remaining 35mm nitrate print) was shown for a single screening.

At the 2019 Sydney Film Festival, the silent version was shown, with live piano accompaniment by Jan Preston (5 June 2019).


Awards:
