This poem was read at a meeting of the Australian Natives Association held at the Maryborough town hall on 19 April, 1915. It was published in the Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser two days later. In the following weeks and months the poem also appeared in a number of other Australian newspapers, often with a slightly different 4th stanza.
