    It should be understood that the Mulla Mulla dam and plains have no real existence, though Australian readers will readily recognise in them the Gunbower district north of Bendigo, and which, for obvious reasons, could not be named.

    It has been necessary for the purpose of the story to create great stations which no longer exist on those plains, and to shift a little the feeding-source of the Mulla Mulla (sic) dam, which, were fact strictly followed, would naturally be the Loddon River, and the dam would be the Laanecoorie. Otherwise the local conditions and place-names of that part of Victoria have been adhered to.
