'I was shortstop—number six—and already a little in love with everyone on the team, though it took me a lot longer to figure that out. The catcher was heron-necked, fingernails flecked with calcium and dipped in light. Centrefield had a too-quick, lemon-bright smile and a dimple on his left cheek.
