BiographyHistory

Leilani Bin-Juda is a Torres Strait Islander woman with Hammond, Darnley and Murray Islands heritage. Leilani was a key figure in establishing the first ACT Torres Strait Islander Corporation, becoming the youngest chairperson under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations Act. 

In 2002, Leilani helped establish the first Torres Strait Culture Centre. She has spent time in Canberra, Thursday Island, China, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and the UK.

In 2019, Leilani was awarded a Public Service media for promoting Indigenous heritage, and in 2020, she was appointed the first female Chief Executive Officer for the Torres Strait Regional Authority.

Leilani wrote an autobiography for inclusion in Growing Up Torres Strait Islander in Australia, which was published in 2024.
