Over the course of Murder in Punch Lane the main character, Lola Sanchez, is rehearsing the role of Ophelia for the Royal Theatre's production of Shakespeare's Hamlet.
A production of Hamlet did take place at Melbourne's Royal Theatre but not with the fictional Sanchez. In the Theatre Royal's 1867 production (as in the novel) the role of Hamlet was played by British actor Walter Montgomery.
