'Sir Thomas Playford the fourth settled in the Adelaide Hills in the 1920's. He became Premier in 1938 after 5 years in parliament. He was an outspoken back-bencher who promoted a laissez faire approach to economics. He inherited a minority governments with a number of independent members. Playford developed a strong view on Socialism and had a good relationship with the leader of the opposition, Mich O'Halloran. He was committed to industrializing and modernizing South Australia which saw an increase in the population of the state.' (Publication summary)
