Progressive rock band formed in Canterbury by English musicians Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt, and Kevin Ayers, and ex-patriate Australian musician Daevid Allen.
Allen was refused re-entry to the UK after the band returned from a European tour in 1967, which ended his involvement with the group. Allen returned to Paris and formed Gong; Soft Machine continued as a trio.
