Annie and Terry Roberts leave Britain in 1956 for Australia, where they struggle with the poor living conditions at the migrant hostel and the local attitudes to migrants. Kate, a young nurse arrives without her fiancé. Bill is trying to make up for the loss of his family business back home. Teeanger Stevie is running from a troubled home life. And Indigenous returned service personnel Ron struggles with being an outside in his own country.
