Crowded House are a rock band, formed in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in 1985. Its founding members were New Zealander Neil Finn (vocalist, guitarist, primary songwriter) and Australians Paul Hester (drums) and Nick Seymour (bass). According to the Crowded House biography Something So Strong, Finn and Hester created a series of demos at Finn's South Yarra home on Osborne Street, where they later auditioned and selected Seymour and guitarist Craig Hooper (Bourke 43). Shortly after forming in Melbourne and playing shows in Australia, the band relocated to Los Angeles to sign with Capitol Records and record their debut album.
Later band members include Neil Finn's brother, Tim Finn, and sons Liam and Elroy.
The band has been in hiatus a number of times since its formation (including between 1996 and 2006, and again between 2011 and 2019), but has regularly re-formed with mainstays Neil Finn and Nick Seymour.
