Notes

  • This poem was the inspiration for a now lost painting by Louis John Steele (1814-1918), an English artist based in New Zealand from 1886. The painting was exhibited widely in New Zealand, and in Australia in the New Zealand Court of the 1888 Melbourne Centennial Exhibition. (Source: Jane Davidson-Ladd.)
