AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'THIELE'S play written specially for radio tells of fishermen on the south coast of Australia who go out to the open sea in small boats to fish for edible sharks.

'Alex Hastings has given up the shark-fishing life, because his young wife Doris, who is about to have a baby, fears the sea. But when the news comes of the presence of great schools of edible shark, Alec is drawn back to the family boat through pressure from his brother, and even his mother.

'Also in the rush is Ike, an embittered old fisherman who is suspected of dubious practices. A hurricane blows up, and the fleet of the tiny craft is thrown in chaos. Every movement, every danger, is followed by those waiting on shore by means of the two-way coast radio patrol, run by Tom Green.

'From his base Tom sends instructions and warnings to the boats, and the boats through their transmitters tell Tom and one another their positions. But the situation is complicated by man-made foul play.'
