19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
This Visitors' Guide to Sydney (1878) is the third in a series of guides to Sydney. It was compiled to set forth the attractions of the city and this edition is particularly concerned with information for tourists. This guide includes a history of New South Wales, a guide to Sydney containing information on streets, suburbs, amusements, day trips across New South Wales and commerce. The work draws on earlier travel narratives, such as Trollope's, to illustrate the colony. The third edition includes a map of the city centre and a map of Port Jackson. The fourth 'Exhibition' edition has the addition of illustrations of public buildings.
Note: this abstract was based on the 1878 edition, there are also copies of an earlier 1874 edition available in libraries.
