19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
Written in diary form, William Clare Taylor's (-1878) Jottings on Australia was dedicated to his South Australian friends. This conversational account of Taylor's travels in Australia formed a narrative that was intended to instruct Taylor's English friends about the ease of travelling to Australia, the comfort of the voyage by steamboat, and the supply of edibles and drinkables in the colonies (Taylor describes putting on weight on the journey). Advocating life in Australia, Taylor provided anecdotes of travel that were interspersed with statistics relating to Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. Taylor continued his journey to America via New Zealand and the Pacific, before returning to Liverpool.
